The Dominican Republic is known for its tropical beaches and natural beauty. The country sits on the second largest island in the Caribbean, surrounded by seas rich with life. Almost 1,000 miles (1,609 km) of Atlantic and Caribbean coastlines attract millions of tourists each year, primarily from the USA. But lots of tourists means lots of trash, and the country lacks waste collection services. Waste is usually burned or dumped – eventually finding its way to the sea. This causes visible plastic pollution, threatens wildlife and marine ecosystems, and leads to waves of plastic washing up on beaches.

Waste Warrior - Asha Moolya

Asha Moolya, once burdened by the long hours and limited staff at Solid Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) in the Nitte Grama panchayat, found a lifeline when she decided to join Project Anmol Kinara in Udupi. Her previous job had her working long hours with no holidays which often resulted in spending limited time with her family.  After joining rePurpose Global’s Project Anmol Kinara she had the opportunity to find a job with reasonable hours allowing her to balance work and family. “My role [with the project] has given me a chance to earn more money to support my husband and improve our quality of life while also being able to spend more quality time with my family.”
