Project Paraíso de Ballenas
Overview.
Buenaventura, on Colombia’s Pacific coast, is surrounded by natural beauty. The area is a popular tourist destination known for its beaches, biodiverse national parks, and whale watching. Breeding grounds for hundreds of migrating humpback whales sit just off the coast. Unfortunately, this ecological hotspot sits in a remote corner of Colombia that has a severe plastic pollution problem.
Partnering with rePurpose Global helps to intercept and recover plastic waste from beaches and surrounding communities. Working with community leaders, the project has created an entirely new value chain for plastic – the first of its kind in the region. The result: cleaner beaches, new opportunities for local workers, and more protection for precious marine life.
