Google - Employee Plastic Footprint Calculator & Reduction Program

Context & Challenge:

• Google Technical Services (gTech) sought to reduce the plastic footprint of its employees through an internal behavior change initiative.
• The challenge was to create a comprehensive tool that could measure, analyze, and promote the reduction of plastic consumption among employees. The goal was to engage employees in sustainability practices and encourage them to adopt actionable plastic reduction strategies.

Our Intervention:

• rePurpose partnered with gTech to develop the Conscious Living Companion, a three-step process designed to embed sustainability into the workplace. We developed a tailored version of our plastic footprint calculator for gTech employees
• The calculator tabulated responses from employees, computing their annual plastic footprint across seven lifestyle categories. We created 21 unique plastic reduction pledges and designed a system to dynamically select and present a pledge to each employee based on their plastic footprint.
• Employees could view their personalized pledge on a post-calculator screen and opt-in to commit to this pledge. Comprehensive backend data management solutions were provided to track and analyze the plastic footprint data and employee engagement metrics..
  

Key Outcomes:

• The initiative successfully engaged gTech employees, increasing awareness of their plastic footprints and promoting active participation in sustainability efforts.
• Employees committed to plastic reduction pledges, taking actionable steps to reduce their plastic consumption both personally and professionally. The tailored plastic footprint calculator and personalized pledges fostered a greater understanding of plastic consumption patterns and the importance of sustainable practices among employees.
