Novel Financing

Designing a first-of-its kind Reuse Outcomes Fund

Context & Challenge:

  • The plastic pollution crisis requires innovative solutions to reduce waste effectively. However, existing models often lack the financial mechanisms necessary to scale impactful reuse and refill initiatives, particularly in low and middle-income communities.
  • The challenge is to create a funding model that prioritizes measurable environmental outcomes and ensures equitable access to waste reduction solutions.

Our Intervention:

  • rePurpose Global launched the first-of-its-kind Reuse Outcomes Fund, a $1 million prototype fund aimed at scaling reuse and refill solutions. This initiative focuses on deploying critically needed infrastructure in the US, Canada, and India, targeting consumer goods sectors with high levels of single-use plastic intensity.
  • The Fund’s core strategy is based on outcomes-based financing, which ties funding to the achievement of specific, measurable environmental results, such as the reduction of tons of plastic waste and ams to develop standards. The fund also aims to support the development of global frameworks and knowledge repositories making best practices and models transferable and replicable in various settings.

Key Outcomes:

  • While the Reuse Outcomes Fund is ongoing, it is expected to lead to several significant advancements such as finance the deployment of reuse and refill infrastructure, particularly benefiting low and middle-income communities, ensure financing is tied to verified environmental impact and  promotes environmental justice by making sustainable solutions accessible to economically disadvantaged populations.
